Federal Skilled Trade Program (FST)

The visa program is particularly suitable for candidates who are looking for a PR status in Canada by securing a job as a person skilled in a specific trade.

Minimum Requirements

There are some eligibility criteria you need to fulfil if you want to be selected from the program, and here are details:

  • Before you apply for the visa program, it is crucial to know that you should have an experience of at least 2 years as a full-time or part-time worker with expertise in a skilled trade as enlisted by the concerned Canadian authorities.
  • Only paid work is regarded as work experience. Any unpaid work of any nature, such as volunteering or internship, is not considered as work experience.
  • You need to fulfil each criterion as set by the National Occupational Classification certification.
  • It is mandatory to already possess a valid offer from a company in Canada, which tells that you are employed by it for at least a year. If you don’t yet have a job offer, you need to have an official qualification certificate issued by the concerned Canadian province.

Professional Experience

The groups coming under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) have the task to organize people with expertise in skilled trade under the FSTR. There are 5 major NOC groups that you need to keep in mind while applying for the PR. It is compulsory to meet every criterion and meet the qualification requirements to be considered under the program. Work experience is considered only when you comply with the terms and conditions of the NOC groups, which require you to have Skill Type B. You need to make the correct entry of your group code and skill level while filling the forms.

Educational Qualification

It is not mandatory to have a specific level of education when you apply for the program. But, if you want to increase the chances to be considered under the Express Entry Pool, you can do it by submitting proof of education, such as a valid diploma or degree certificate. It earns you more favorable points.

Secondary / Post-secondary Institution

The Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) performs an assessment of your educations credentials when you have obtained a degree or certificate from an institute in a foreign country.

Language Ability

As an applicant, you have to show a minimum grasp of language. You need to score a band score of 5 in speaking and listening, and 4 in reading and writing, in a standard test.

You must enter the test results in your application

Don’t forget to enter the results of language test in your profile, under Express Entry. An important thing that you need to keep in mind is the test results are valid for 2 years after the date when you took the test. You have to apply for the PR status within this period of 2 years.

Proof of Funds

Yet another mandatory document that you need to produce is a proof of funds that would comfortably sustain you and your family in the country. Moreover, you need to have a legitimate job offer from a Canadian employer.

Admissibility

There is no particular obligation that you need to reside in a province where your job is. There is a special case when you work in Quebec. You need to live outside the province. The form has a section where you are asked about preferences in locations.

Know how a territory or provinces performs an assessment

As an applicant or person interested to settle in Canada, you may have to visit the particular territory or province. In some cases, there can be terms and conditions where you need to receive training and/or experience under a Canadian employer. There’s an official website of trades body. You need to explore it thoroughly to know relevant details of the process, especially from an administrative viewpoint. It is good to know that the assessment procedure can most likely vary from province to province. The Canadian Information Center can provide you valuable information in this regard.
